There are weekends that are more special than others, which finally bring you back to normal, albeit in a context that is anything but ordinary: extraordinary! I'm talking about the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, the most important European event of classic cars. Thanks to A. Lange & Söhne we had the privilege of being able to spend a wonderful day there among dream cars and watches.
After being welcomed into the area reserved for customers A. Lange & Söhne, a wonderful veranda near the floating swimming pool of Villa d'Este, we were able to admire the masterpieces of the Glashütte manufacture which is the official partner of Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este from 2012.
A consolidated partnership and more relevant than ever, in which it is easy to reflect common values: aesthetics, craftsmanship and tradition. For the first time, this year the winner of the "Best of show", Assigned to Ferrari 250 GT TDF, received a unique copy of Chronograph 1815 with pink gold dial. The folding outer caseback bears the Competition emblem and is hand-engraved.
A. Lange & Söhne they are aesthetically elegant and endowed with a great simplicity of reading the complications, everything is in the right place, clear, defined. But when you delve into what is placed under the dial, you enter a different world, made of wheels, levers and disks for displaying the date, of the moon phases.
To clarify our ideas then it could only be those who design an A. Lange & Söhne, or Anthony de Haas, responsible for product development. With great enthusiasm and extreme simplicity, Anthony showed us the process behind optimizing the caliber L021.3 mounted on A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar and new technical solutions designed to improve the energy efficiency of movement.
In the previous caliber L021.1, the second wheel had a double function and a spring was provided to ensure the smooth running of the continuous seconds of the movement. All of this caused greater friction and a considerable waste of energy. The new caliber L021.3 solved this problem by adding two intermediate wheels connected to the main wheel train. The energy transmitted by the main spring, contained by the barrel, is thus not dispersed and its efficiency increases.
Another improvement is that of the disc which now incorporates at the same time the indication of the day and night and the indication of the moon phases. Anthony de Haas he wanted to show it to us with a hand-made sketch during the explanation ..
Over the course of the day we got to try out other masterpieces by A. Lange & Söhne, as the 1815 Chronograph Boutique Edition and Langematik Perpetual Calendar Anniversart LE.
Returning to the protagonists of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, we came across another type of mechanical and design jewel presented exclusively in this important event. During the review Rolls-Royce has in fact presented a Sweptail very special, created thanks to very similar ideas of three Rolls customers. The result is the new boat tail, of which three will be built for each of these customers and each will have their own unique stylistic elements, color and trim specifications and other special details.
But the real stars of the Concorso d'Eleganza are the cars that participated in the event. They will forgive mepetrolheads'that they are reading if we will leave out a few, but the selection was difficult due to the amount of “Beauty” on two wheels present at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2021.
