The rumors and the numerous renderings are finally confirmed, OMEGA has recently unveiled the new Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch 64 years after its birth. The Speedmaster collection is thus updated, faithfully respecting its design and bringing it to the highest levels of precision and resistance to magnetic fields that OMEGA has achieved with the introduction of the Master Chronometer certification.
But let's see in detail how this new Speedmaster Moonwatch differs from the previous version which had been in production for substantially 25 years!
CASE and DIAL
The design inspired by the style of the fourth generation Moonwatch, commonly referred to as ST 105.012, and worn by Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969. Starting with 42mm steel case of the new Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, mirroring that of the recent version of the Silver Snoopy Award.
Other small but important details draw on the history of the Speedmaster, the dial with external step that gives life to what collectors call "Pie Pan", The double beveled caseback and the famous point beyond 90 (DON) it's a diagonal point at 70 on the disc of the bezel in anodized aluminum. The small parts are now divided into 3 divisions, unlike the 5 divisions of the previous models.
The chronograph seconds hand has been redesigned, with the final part filled with luminescent material that is wider and similar to those mounted by references used in the past, such as the ST145.012.
The bracelet of the previous Speedmaster Moonwatch has always been a sore point in my opinion. So much so that I prefer to wear it with a NATO or leather strap, but the new bracelet is probably one of the better upgrades. The bracelet has also finally been updated, and is very similar to the one fitted on the 145022-69, bracelet ref. 1116/575, which tapers starting from 20mm of the attack with the case, up to 16mm of the clasp which pays homage to the one mounted on the gold reference of 145.022-69.
The OMEGA Caliber 3861
But the real, important, improvement made to the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is the caliber Master Chronometer 3861 with CoAxial escapement, which replaces the previous 1861, and finally bringing this iconic timepiece to the levels reached by other OMEGA calibers. We are talking about one accuracy between 0 seconds and +5 seconds per day, resistance to magnetic fields greater than 15,000 gauss it's a power reserve of 50 hours.
There are four versions available in steel of the new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. The “entry level” version is more iconic with glass in esalite and closed caseback is available both with a steel bracelet and with a beautiful black nylon strap with folding clasp. Prices are 6,300€ for reference 310.30.42.50.01.001 with bracelet e 6,000€ for reference 310.32.42.50.01.001 with strap.
The other two versions differ in the presence of vetro in sapphire mounted on the front and on the caseback. In addition, the dial of these versions has the shiny Omega logo applied at 12 o'clock, while the logo is printed on those in esalite. Prices are 7,200€ for reference 310.30.42.50.01.002 with bracelet e 6,800€ for reference 310.32.42.50.01.002 with strap.
In addition to the classic steel model, probably given the great success of the celebratory edition of the Apolo XI presented in 2019, Omega has also introduced two models in Sedna gold e Canopus. Both versions feature double sapphire crystal with visible caliber 3861.
The price of the Sedna gold version is 34,900€ with bracelet and 24,700€ for the one with strap. While the price of the Canopus gold version is 45,400€ with bracelet and 30,500€ for the one with strap.
