On the occasion of the brand new Watch & Wonders format held in digital exclusive due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19, IWC wanted to completely renew the range of its perhaps most famous model, the Porugieser or Portuguese if you prefer, proposing new versions and complications.
At the base of the new collection there are 5 in-house calibers, the introduction of which has made it possible to provide customers with an 8-year warranty extension by simply registering the watch on the IWC website:
- Caliber 69: automatic with chronograph function and column wheel used for the iconic Portuguese
- Caliber 89: automatic with flyback function used for "Yacht Club" models
- Caliber 59: manual with monopusher chronograph function.
- Caliber 82: automatic movement. It oscillates at 4Hz and features the charging system introduced by Pellaton.
- Caliber 52: automatic and with a power reserve of 7 days.
Below you can find all the news presented.
Portugieser Automatic 40 (Ref. IW5007)
It is a totally new model both in case size (40 mm) and in the caliber adopted (new in-house caliber 82). The aesthetic is based on the very first Portuguese 325 from 1939 and has a very clean and simple layout, with the second one at 6 o'clock in addition to the hour and minute indication.
It introduces a new closure created specifically for this model in order to have a high comfort even on the thinnest wrists. There are three versions available in steel and one in gold with selling prices ranging between € 7 and € 250.
The most classic Portugieser with seconds counter at 6 o'clock and minutes at 12 o'clock is renewed by introducing tiny changes to the iconic dial (such as the adoption of the new IWC logo introduced in 2013) and mounting the new IWC-manufactured 69 caliber. The available versions are numerous and alternate between steel and rose gold with different combinations of dials available. I would like to point out the presence of the brand new burgundy and green dials mounted on a steel case.
Portugieser Yacht Club (REF. IW3907)
The third generation of Yacht Clubs is presented to the general public and sees the introduction of numerous innovations. In the more classic models, we find a new integrated bracelet with polished and satin links with a 5 mm adjustable clasp, a 42 mm case and a redesigned dial. The movement that drives this watch is the automatic manufacture caliber 89 with flyback chronogarph (hours counter combined with minutes at 12 and seconds at 6), date and 68-hour power reserve. There are 3 versions available, two of which in steel and one in a steel-rose gold combination, sold for € 13 and € 000 respectively.
The big news for this collection is represented by a brand new model in rose gold with an indication of the double moon phases (classic by IWC) which is combined with that for the sigizial and square tides, as well as the high and low tide at hours. 6. It is a real navigation instrument and not surprisingly part of the Yacht Club collection. The caliber adopted is the caliber 82, also automatic and manufactured, and belongs to the new generation of movements that IWC has introduced while the case is 44.6 mm in 5N rose gold. The selling price is € 35.
Portuguese Perpetual Calendar 42
The Portugieser perpetual calendar with a 42 mm case is another completely new watch. The perpetual calendar module is added to the new caliber 82 to display the day of the week, date and month with moon phases at 9, 3 and 6 respectively. Inside the counter of the day of the week there is also a small hole that allows you to show whether we are in a leap year or not. The selling prices are € 22'700 for the steel and € 32'800 for the 5N gold counterpart.
Portuguese Perpetual Calendar 44 (Ref. IW 3442)
The iconic perpetual calendar with a 44 mm case is presented in a new guise reserved for boutiques only. The Armor Gold watch case is paired with a deep blue dial with a single moon phase display. The caliber 52 adopted has the advantage of having all the functions synchronized and adjusted with the winding crown alone without the need for any corrector and the selling price is € 38.
The entire collection could not miss the haute horlogerie pieces with tourbillons. There are two models that belong to this category and we can find a 44 mm version of the perpetual calendar with tourbillon at 12 o'clock and moon phases shifted at 6 o'clock, and a flyback chronograph with tourbillon at 6 o'clock, chronograph with hours and minutes at hours. 12 and retrograde date at 9 o'clock.
Both models are available in Armor Gold with a blue dial and in Platinum with a silver dial but are limited to 50 pieces per version. Selling prices start at € 120.
The Porugieser collection has been completely renewed and I'm sure you can find the model that best matches your tastes.
